The Governors are a vital part of the school partnership, working together for the benefit of the children and the effective running of the school. They work closely with teachers, non-teaching staff and parents to provide the best possible education for the children of Springdale.

OfSTED (2013) recognised the outstanding contribution that our dedicated and hard working governors make to the school.  Governors are often in school and participate in school life.

Our Governing Body has a strong focus on three core strategic functions within Springdale:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos & strategic direction
  • Holding our headteacher to account for the educational performance of Springdale & its pupils
  • Overseeing the financial performance of Springdale & making sure its money is well spent

In order to meet this criteria used by Ofsted to judge the effectiveness of governance at Springdale, we constantly:

  • Evaluate our performance and best practice
  • Challenge and support
  • Make necessary changes to improve effectiveness

To ensure we focus as a team on our core functions we have three committees, meeting at least termly but often half termly.

Learning & Curriculum Committee

(Members: Sue Becher, Isobel Evans, Sharon Kimber, Wendy Washbrook)

  • Monitors the delivery of the curriculum
  • Review the school’s performance overall
  • Review the progress of different pupil groups compared to all pupils nationally and with similar prior attainment.
  • Work with the Headteacher to identify priorities for areas of improvement.

Within the L&C committee, Isobel Evans is our dedicated SEND (Special Educational Needs & Disability) and Pupil Premium Governor. She works alongside Springdale’s SEND Co-coordinator to ensure we have specific oversight of our school’s arrangements for SEN and disability.

Pastoral Committee

(Members: Peter Cotton, Jay Durrant, Paula Martin, Mark Portelli)

  • Ensures all pastoral needs for children and staff are managed timely and effectively.
  • Monitor safeguarding, attendance, behavior, discipline, personal development & wellbeing, school ethos, parent liaison and equalities.

Within the Pastoral Committee we have Paula Martin, Springdale’s dedicated Pastoral Care Worker and Peter Cotton, nominated as Safeguarding governor.

Resource Committee

(Members: Chris Elms, Simon Harwood, Sarah Johnstone, Carolyn Rigler)

  • Make certain Springdale spend their money in areas that ensure the best outcomes for the current cohort of pupils.
  • Challenge whether Springdale is being cost effective
  • Ensure better results with effective spending per pupil.

Within the Resource Committee Chris Elms is currently our dedicated Health & Safety governor ensuring our building needs and safety are monitored.

Link Governors: Year & Subject

Each parent governor has a link to a specific year group.  They often move through the school with this cohort of pupils, understanding how they develop and grow through learning and also socially.  They support the teaching staff and are also available for parents to link through should there be a need.

Subject governors liaise with their teaching subject lead to understand how the curriculum is being delivered and provide support as and when required.

Both link and subject governors provide a termly monitoring report on their findings.

If you have any questions or wish to talk to a member of the governing body then please liaise through our Clerk to the Governors, Melena Biwole (01202 692700).

Minutes from each meetings once agreed and signed off (usually the term following the meeting) are available via email upon request from the Clerk to the Governors, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
